With its strategic location, robust infrastructure and skilled workforce, Nova Scotia, Canada is a significant player in Canada's aerospace and defence sector. As the industry grows, the Canadian government is making significant investments in fostering advancements and business development in the region.

Recent Federal Announcements Through its new defence strategy, Our North Strong and Free: A Renewed Vision for Canada’s Defence, the federal government has earmarked significant investment that will enhance our military capacity and support the development of aerospace and defence companies across the country. Companies can leverage Nova Scotia’s unique strengths in the following categories:

Maritime Sensors - $1.4 billion over 20 years to acquire specialized maritime sensors to conduct ocean surveillance. Nova Scotia offers unique expertise and advantages in maritime sensor R&D. With a rich ecosystem of industry leaders developing the latest in sensor technology, the province is home to the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE), who just announced a five-year partnership with Defence Research and Development Canada to be their maritime test partner.

Naval Fleet Sustainability - $9.9 billion over 20 years to improve the sustainment of naval fleets. Irving Shipbuilding is building Canada’s next fleet of combat vessels in Halifax, Nova Scotia, at the largest under-cover shipbuilding facility in North America. The Canadian government has invested $463 million for facility upgrades for Irving to further expand the number of supply chain companies choosing Nova Scotia and continue to grow the shipbuilding workforce.

NATO Accelerator Sites - $11.5 billion over 20 years to increase NATO’s common budget and establish a new office in Halifax for NATO DIANA. NATO recently established a regional office in Halifax, Nova Scotia, including choosing COVE as one of its accelerator sites. DIANA-affiliated accelerators deliver world-class programming, while the network of test centres provides access to innovative testing facilities. This offers many opportunities for companies at many stages to get involved and test and try new applications.
