Governments are investing in sovereign access to space, commercial operators are deploying thousands of new satellites, and demand for launch services continues to rise. For companies planning where to invest and grow, that expansion is putting new weight on a factor that cannot be changed: location. Infrastructure can be built and technology can advance, but what a launch site makes possible begins with where it is located. That differentiator is bringing new attention to Canso, Nova Scotia, where Atlantic geography offers advantages that are difficult to find elsewhere and impossible to recreate through investment alone.
Not every launch site can support every mission. Satellites require different orbital inclinations depending on their purpose, from communications and Earth observation to environmental monitoring, scientific research and national security.
Market analyses cited by the U.S. Government Accountability Office project that more than 18,000 additional satellites could launch by 2030. That scale of activity will place new demands on global launch capacity and increase the value of locations that can support a wider range of missions.
For European launch providers, location presents an additional consideration. Existing sites support many mission requirements, but their geography can limit the orbital inclinations they efficiently access. Complementary sites can expand those options while providing another point of access across allied markets.
Canso, Nova Scotia provides access to a broad range of orbital inclinations through launch corridors over the Atlantic Ocean. Its coastal location can support commercial, civil and defence missions while avoiding many of the constraints associated with more densely populated regions.
International companies are already acting on that advantage. In July 2026, German launch company Isar Aerospace signed an agreement with Maritime Launch Services to develop a dedicated launch complex for its Spectrum vehicle at Spaceport Nova Scotia in Canso. The agreement expands Isar Aerospace’s launch infrastructure beyond Europe and establishes a North American presence in Nova Scotia.
The Government of Canada is also investing in Canso. In March 2026, it announced a 10-year, $200-million agreement for a dedicated launch pad at Spaceport Nova Scotia. The site will support National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces and other federal initiatives, with access available to allies and partners.
Infrastructure can be expanded, technologies upgraded and facilities adapted to new requirements. Geography cannot. Canso’s latitude, coastal access and launch trajectories provide a long-term advantage for companies considering where to invest and operate.
Launch is only one part of the opportunity. As companies establish operations, they create demand across advanced manufacturing, satellite technologies, software, precision engineering, testing, logistics and specialized supply chains.
That activity is already extending beyond the launch pad. In August 2026, Leaf Space activated its first Canadian ground station at Spaceport Nova Scotia, connecting the site to its international satellite communications network and supporting commercial satellite traffic from Canada’s Atlantic coast.
Nova Scotia also has established strengths in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), remote sensing and ocean observation. These specialties support Earth observation, maritime monitoring, situational awareness and environmental monitoring, with applications in launch planning and over-ocean operations.
The opportunity in Nova Scotia extends beyond access to orbit. For international space companies, it offers the ability to expand mission options, establish a presence in North America and connect into a market where new launch and ground infrastructure is already attracting investment.
As the global space economy grows, companies will need to think differently about where they build their next phase of operations. Nova Scotia brings together the geography, market access and industry strengths to make that decision a compelling one, with the opportunity to invest as a new centre of commercial space activity takes shape on Canada’s Atlantic coast.
