As the world races toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, Nova Scotia, Canada is stepping onto the global stage, not just as a participant, but as a leader. Our province has the potential to become one of the most exciting energy hubs in North America, combining innovation, natural advantage, and an agile business ecosystem that welcomes global investment.
At Invest Nova Scotia, we’re seeing momentum build across the energy spectrum from renewable generation to advanced storage and decarbonized fuels. The message is clear: Nova Scotia is full of opportunity.
Powering the Future: From Wind to Battery Innovation
With some of the strongest and most consistent wind resources in North America, Nova Scotia’s offshore wind potential is vast. The province is advancing a strategic offshore wind framework that opens opportunities for international developers, supply chain partners, and manufacturers to establish a foothold in a rapidly expanding industry. Our ports, marine expertise, and shipbuilding heritage create an ideal foundation for companies supporting offshore wind development across the Atlantic region.
Complementing this is Nova Scotia’s fast-growing battery technology sector. Local innovators are developing cutting-edge solutions for energy storage and circular economy recycling, critical components of the global energy transition. Supported by leading research at institutions like Dalhousie University, which has long-standing partnerships with global battery leaders, Nova Scotia is positioning itself as a go-to location for next-generation energy storage solutions.
Building the Supply Chain for a Sustainable Future
Energy innovation doesn’t happen in isolation it thrives in connected ecosystems. Nova Scotia’s strategic location on the Atlantic seaboard provides direct access to North American and European markets, making it a natural hub for energy-related manufacturing, logistics, and service operations. Our ports and industrial zones are expanding to accommodate the infrastructure, equipment, and workforce needs of the new energy economy.
Advancing the Bioeconomy
Companies and research centres across the province are turning forestry and marine by-products into renewable fuels and sustainable materials. The Verschuren Centre and the GreenSpring Bioinnovation Hub are driving innovation that connects industry, academia, and government, creating new pathways for investment and commercialization in the bioeconomy.
System Transformation
The province also is making strides in transforming Nova Scotia’s energy system through the new Independent Energy System Operator (IESO Nova Scotia), enhancing transparency and accountability in system planning, new energy source procurement, and management of grid connections for clean energy projects. IESO Nova Scotia officially began operations this year as an independent, not-for-profit organization.
Natural Gas and Transition Energy
IESO Nova Scotia recently launched a request for expressions of interest for companies to design, build, own and operate at least 300 megawatts of fast acting gas fired electricity at specified sites that are being de-risked for development.
As we accelerate towards a net zero future, natural gas is positioned to support the reliability and stability of the province’s energy mix while enabling new intermittent renewable generation to come online. Our natural gas assets also present transition opportunities for cleaner fuels, such as RNG and green hydrogen. In fact, Nova Scotia has amended legislation to create the regulatory framework for hydrogen blending in our gas distribution systems and there are blending projects already underway.
