DEFSEC Atlantic 2026 brought a record 3,500 attendees to Halifax, underscoring the unprecedented growth and opportunity emerging across the aerospace and defence sector. From major procurement programs and naval modernization efforts to advances in autonomous systems, cybersecurity, and space technologies, the conversations throughout the conference pointed to a common challenge: where can companies find the partnerships, talent, and ecosystem needed to grow?

Increasingly, they're finding those advantages in Nova Scotia, where being closer to the mission means being closer to the military customers, innovation partners, and business opportunities driving the sector forward.

As conversations at DEFSEC made clear, Nova Scotia's aerospace and defence advantage extends far beyond geography. Here are five reasons companies are choosing to establish, expand, and invest in the province.

1. An Established Defence Ecosystem

Nova Scotia is home to one of Canada's most mature and diverse defence ecosystems, spanning naval systems, aerospace, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, training and simulation, and marine technology.

That ecosystem was on full display at DEFSEC, where military leaders, major primes, SMEs, researchers, and international partners came together to explore procurement opportunities, technology partnerships, and future capability development.

2. Close to the Customer

Being closer to the mission means being closer to the customer.

With Canada's largest naval base, a significant military presence, and key Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force operations, Nova Scotia provides companies with direct access to end users, decision-makers, and operational expertise.

At DEFSEC, companies had the opportunity to engage directly with military operators, NATO organizations, and defence departments, helping accelerate the connection between emerging technologies and operational requirements.

3. Innovation with Global Impact

Nova Scotia continues to strengthen its reputation as a centre for defence innovation through organizations such as COVE, the Defence Innovation Secure Hub (DISH), NATO's DIANA North American headquarters, and leading post-secondary research institutions.

During DEFSEC week, COVE hosted NATO's Innovation Continuum, bringing innovators, researchers, military operators, and industry leaders together to test and evaluate emerging technologies in real-world scenarios, further showcasing Nova Scotia's role in advancing defence innovation.

4. The Talent to Grow

Aerospace and defence companies need highly skilled people to compete globally, and Nova Scotia continues to invest in developing that workforce.

Events like DEFSEC and the Innovation Continuum create opportunities for students, researchers, startups, and growing companies to connect with defence organizations and global partners.

Discussions throughout the week reinforced the importance of talent as a competitive advantage. Companies are drawn to Nova Scotia's deep pool of engineers, researchers, skilled trades professionals, and veterans who bring both technical expertise and experience working in defence and security environments.

5. Positioned for What's Next

Nova Scotia is already playing a key role in some of Canada's most significant defence opportunities, including the River-class destroyer program, future submarine sustainment opportunities, autonomous systems development, cybersecurity initiatives, and emerging space technologies.

For companies looking to establish or expand their footprint, Nova Scotia offers access to opportunities that will help shape the future of defence for decades to come.

Looking Ahead

The record-breaking turnout at DEFSEC Atlantic 2026 highlighted both the strength of the industry today and the opportunities ahead. As defence investment accelerates and supply chains evolve, companies are increasingly looking for jurisdictions that offer the right mix of an established ecosystem, customers, innovation, and skilled talent.

Nova Scotia continues to deliver on all four. That's what it means to be Closer to the Mission.
