NRStor Trenton Energy Storage GP Inc. is a partnership between Wskijnu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency Ltd. (“WMA”), NRStor Inc. (“NRStor”), and Aecon Group Inc. (“Aecon”), together, the “Partners.” Established to develop Indigenous-led energy storage infrastructure across Atlantic Canada, the Partners combine distinct strengths. WMA represents the collective economic interests of 13 Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq communities. NRStor serves as Canada’s leading developer of utility-scale energy storage projects, including the landmark Oneida Energy Storage Project. Aecon contributes decades of experience delivering major Canadian energy and infrastructure initiatives. Together, the Partners advance infrastructure that strengthens electricity reliability, enables renewable energy integration, and creates long-term economic participation for Indigenous communities. Their approach reflects a shared commitment to economic reconciliation by developing nationally significant clean energy infrastructure through meaningful Indigenous partnership and ownership. This model intends to create lasting economic benefits while supporting clean energy transitions, energy security, and long-term regional competitiveness.
The Trenton Energy Storage Project is a 150 megawatt (MW) / 1,200 megawatt-hour (MWh) to 300 MW / 2,400 MWh battery facility in Trenton, Nova Scotia, sited adjacent to the province's first coal plant set for closure. It will deliver non-emitting grid services that help accelerate the shift from coal per the province’s 2030 Clean Power Plan, lower greenhouse gas emissions, balance renewable energy, improve reliability, result in ratepayer savings, and prioritize Indigenous economic participation.
The project aligns with the Nation-Building Atlantic Energy Strategy, including Wind West, and the Transmission InterConnect Investment Strategy. It also advances the objectives of the July 2026 Memorandum of Understanding between New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island on a future Maritime Independent Electricity System Operator.
A $2 million Natural Resources Canada (“NRCan”) Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (“SREPs”) Capacity Building grant funded due diligence, including archaeological, environmental, and geotechnical studies, Mi'kmaq Ecological Knowledge research, and the Independent Energy System Operator Nova Scotia (“IESO-NS”) interconnection application. With these milestones largely complete, the Project is positioned to advance toward commercial negotiations and execution of an Energy Storage Services Agreement with IESO-NS, targeting in-service by early 2029, subject to permitting and regulatory timelines. The Project is eligible for Clean Technology Investment Tax Credits and a capital contribution NRCan SREPs.
