There’s something special happening in Nova Scotia right now. Speaking daily with visionary companies across aerospace, defence, and emerging space technologies, I can confidently say our province has entered a new era of space innovation.
Backed by national investment, groundbreaking research and a fast-advancing commercial launch ecosystem, Nova Scotia is becoming one of Canada’s most compelling locations for space companies looking to grow.
Here’s what’s fueling the momentum.
Canada’s Space Future has Strong Backing and Nova Scotia is at the Centre
As Canada strengthens its sovereign space capabilities, Nova Scotia is emerging as a key gateway to the country's space future. Federal investments in launch infrastructure, domestic launch technologies and national space capabilities are helping build a more complete Canadian space ecosystem, creating new opportunities across the space value chain.
With growing momentum in launch operations, satellite technologies and supporting industries, Nova Scotia is well positioned to connect Canadian innovation with global markets. These investments are helping establish the province as an important hub for commercial space activity, reinforcing its role in Canada's rapidly evolving space sector.
Spaceport Nova Scotia: Canada’s First Commercial Launch Site
No conversation about the province’s space sector is complete without Spaceport Nova Scotia, operated by Maritime Launch Services (MLS), Canada’s first commercial launch complex capable of placing satellites into polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Its location on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore offers direct access to some of the world’s most in-demand orbital paths, with clear launch trajectories over the Atlantic and no populated overflight areas.
What makes the spaceport particularly unique is that it is already active, supporting suborbital and hypersonic missions with launch vehicle partners while development of its orbital launch capabilities continues. As one of the few sites globally able to support this combination of operations, Spaceport Nova Scotia is helping position the province as a strategic gateway for Canada’s growing space industry.
Homegrown Innovation: Dalhousie Space Systems Lab
Dalhousie University is helping drive Nova Scotia's growing space sector through leading research, satellite development, and next-generation space technologies. Its Dalhousie Space Systems Lab has successfully designed and launched satellites while training the next generation of Canadian space workforce.
With expertise spanning AI, Earth observation, ocean monitoring, and autonomous spacecraft systems, Dalhousie is developing the talent and innovations needed to support Canada's future space and defence missions.
