Sector Overview

What gives Nova Scotia the edge?

It's not just natural resources — it's infrastructure, innovation, and collaboration. The province offers:

  • Abundant resources – world-class onshore and offshore wind energy capacity and access to fresh water
  • Existing infrastructure – deep water ice-free harbours, well-established port services, a compatible natural gas distribution system, land for facilities, permitted sites and facilities and proximity to key global markets
  • Experienced personnel – highly competent workforce, supply chain and research community, with expertise in clean and emerging technologies
  • Strong regulatory framework – environmental protections and safety standards support responsible hydrogen development
  • Government policy – a goal to license at least 5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, providing power for large-scale hydrogen export projects

This combination makes Nova Scotia a launchpad for the future of green energy.

Wind West

Wind West

Nova Scotia has been working with Canada as our joint management partner to realize the full economic and environmental potential of the clean energy sector and become home to Canada’s first offshore wind farm.

With the necessary transmission infrastructure, Nova Scotia’s offshore wind can be a foundational piece to securing greater energy security and sovereignty for Canada. Forging ahead on this vision, the Province has proposed the Wind West nation-building project.

Wind West would be an east-west High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission interconnection that can reduce renewable energy supply costs, enhance reliability, enable the increased use of clean energy
