Tuesday, January 29, 2002

HALIFAX (Jan. 29, 2002) — Three Nova Scotia centres – Truro, Halifax, and Sydney – are among the best sites in the world for doing business, according to a new KPMG report comparing business costs in North America, Europe and Japan.

“This external, independent assessment reaffirms what we in Nova Scotia already know and international companies are quickly finding out – this is a cost-effective place to do business,” said Stephen Lund, President and CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc. “Our job is to build on our strengths and increase recognition of these strengths both in Nova Scotia and in the global marketplace.”

KPMG considers its Competitive Alternatives report, released today, to be the most thorough comparison for international business costs ever undertaken by the international business consulting firm. It contains essential information for any company seeking a cost advantage in locating business operations.

Truro, Halifax and Sydney were the only Nova Scotia centres considered in the study, and all three ranked high - in the Top 20 of the 115 centres surveyed.

The study looked at the cost of doing business in 115 centres in nine industrial nations. It measured the combined impact of 27 cost components that are most likely to vary by location. The 10-month research program covered centres in Canada, the United States, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Japan. Full results are on line at www.competitivealternatives.com .

“Truro, Sydney and Halifax are to be congratulated for their top placing,” said Lund. “The ranking speaks volumes about the strength of the case for doing business in Nova Scotia.”
